i think that a person from Afghanistan would not encounter so many problem here in barranquilla, otherwise i think they would do very well. here in barranquilla are so much people from the arabian culture. diferent religions about this. maybe the only complication they would have if they came here to a study abroad would be the language. as they dont speak spanish and they would not understand anything here. Communication barriers are a reality of living abroad and making sense of foreigners’ lives. You can choose to let these follies stress you out, or you can take them in stride and chalk it up as another learning opportunity. Make an honest effort to familiarize yourself with local cultural norms and lingo. If you are not fluent in the host country’s first language, carry around a translation dictionary or fill up your smart phone with related foreign language apps. Befriend locals and ask for tips and advice for ways to more authentically interact with strangers. At the end of the day, you should not let the fear of offending someone or speaking incorrectly keep you from interacting healthily within the host culture. You will learn with time, and if you are patient with yourself , you will feel like a bi-lingual superhero before you know it. also you can feel like an outsider You suddenly look around and feel very alone. You are surrounded by “others,” and your looks, your fashion, your inability to communicate in the local tongue, or your general presence is very obviously… different. Never before have you felt so out of place or disconnected. While you are a stranger to this new land, you will start to feel comfortable in no time it might just takes you a few weeks to adjust.
subcultures
Afghanistan is a large country in South Asia and is home to many different ethnic groups. It is a little bit smaller than the U.S. state of Texas and is bordered by Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan. Of the 30 million people living there, the dominant religion is Muslim, with about 99.7% of the country’s population identifying as such. Afghanistan is a large and populous country with many different ethnic groups Note: Because of ongoing conflict, updated statistics on ethnic groups in the country and their exact numbers have been difficult to maintain. The subject of ethnicity is quite sensitive and therefore finding definitive numbers can be difficult. So for now, let’s talk about the history and culture of some of the biggest ethnic groups in the country.
Pashtun
The Pashtun are the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan as they make up roughly half of its population. The Pashtun are organized into tribes based on social division like religion or kinship lines. The Pashtun are made up of about sixty different tribes, each with their own territory in the country and are considered politically powerful.
The Pashtun are largely Sunni Muslims, (the religion of Islam is divided into Sunni Muslims and Shi’a Muslims). Culturally, honor is very important to the Pashtun and things like family and property are highly valued and defended. The Pashtun live mostly in the south and east of the country and for the most part members of this group speak a unique language called Pashto.
The invasion by the Soviet Union in 1979 caused many Afghans to flee, many of whom were Pashtun. The Pashtun are economically disadvantaged and often live in harsh conditions without access to things like running water or adequate shelter.
Tajiks
Tajiks are the second largest ethnic group in Afghanistan and most of the country’s elites belong to this group. Most Tajiks in Afghanistan are practicing Sunni Muslims, like the Pashtun. Most speak a language similar to Farsi, which is the most common language in Iran. Historically, Tajiks mainly lived in the urban centers of Afghanistan but more recently have spread out to other areas.
Like the Pashtun, the Tajiks are politically powerful due to their considerable wealth (relative to many in the country) and their higher levels of education. Recently, Tajiks have engaged in struggle for greater political participation in the government of Afghanistan, although they were recognized as an official ethnic group by the constitution in 2014.
Hazara
The third largest ethnic group in Afghanistan is the Hazara. In the past, this group was actually the largest in the country. However, after facing brutal violence and ethnic cleansing, or large scale expulsion of an ethnic group, their numbers were dramatically reduced. Today, many Hazara continue to face discrimination and persecution as the result of ongoing conflict in the country
lewis model
I think This country could be at the multiactive lewis model category because there are related countries at this. comparing it with colombia maybe they could have some similar things by this model even though we are in diferents continents, by the category we could have equal behaviors alike , impulsive, emotional or other types. but comparing our culture, in colombia with Afghans i think we don’t have many things in common. if we talk about women rights in Afghanistan is the worst country to be one. In contrast with colombia here women are free to be or to use what they want. although our country is chauverism . Afghanistan customer’s behaviour is defined by his/her culture, Afghan culture giving evidence to support the claim it has defined where in the Lewis Model Afghans culturally fit lesson the gap which exists between Afghans and those who want to conduct business in Afghanistan. Information found being compared to the categories of culture When Cultures Collide -Placing Afghanistan in its appropriate place on the Lewis Model The research defines Afghans as multi-active people, who are extroverts and put emphasis on human-transaction. Religion has an important role in the society, males and females are not considered equal. Creating relationships are considered more important than building empires. for the specific topic of afghan culture in general its hard.to find the word culture together with the word afhgan . Even afghans themselves do not know what to say about their culture . they assume that since they are musslims, between iran and pakistan they most likely have similar behaviors or habits as their neighbors.
Gender roles
Afghan men strongly oppose giving women more freedom they think they have too much already . there is a wide range of standards set for accepted female behavior, Religious teachings against women’s rights under the Taliban regime had also played a role in hardening views among younger men, as well as differences in male attitudes toward correct treatment of women. Contradictions arise between traditional customary practices, many of which impinge on the rights of women and are alien to the spirit of Islam, the other functioning canon which emphasizes equality, justice, education and community service for both men and women. Further, the dictates of Islam are themselves subject to diverse interpretation among reformists, Islamists and ultraconservatives. the position of women in Afghanistan was among the worst in the world. Many men participate in the maintenance of unjust gender relations and sexist practices, becoming gatekeepers of the gender order and using social constructions of masculinity and male identity to justify it.
